Selena Gomez Calls For Justice For Breonna Taylor

Selena Gomez joined the rising swell of voices calling for justice for Breonna Taylor on Friday (June 5) — which would have been the Louisville, Kentucky, native’s 27th birthday.

Taylor’s name has become a familiar refrain during the nearly two weeks of protests in every U.S. state against police brutality and the police-involved killings of black and brown men and women, including the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis after a now-fired officer held a knee to Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes.

“Breonna Taylor would’ve been 27 years old today. The same age I am. But she was shot 8 times,” Gomez wrote, encouraging her followers to sign a petition urging officials to immediately file charges against the arresting officers and pay wrongful death damages to Taylor’s family.

To date, the petition has been signed by more than four million people.

Taylor’s mother called for the firing of the officers who shot her daughter this week, pushing for an end to the monthslong investigation into her death. WAVE 3 News reported that on Wednesday that the Metro Council Public Safety Committee unanimously passed a proposal this week to severely limit and monitor no-knock warrants in Louisville; the proposal goes to the full Metro Council for a vote on June 11.

On Thursday, dozens of other musicians, including Audra McDonald, Ben Platt, Demi Lovato, Cyn, Solange, Kehlani and many more, also urged their fans to remember Taylor and sign the petition.
