Selena Quintanilla’s legacy continues to endure, 25 years after her passing on March 31, 1995.

Netflix previously revealed that a series of the Queen of Tejano is in the works; Selena: The Series comes 23 years after the release of the Oscar-nominated biographical movie Selena, directed by Gregory Navas and starring Jennifer Lopez.

Here’s everything we know of the Netflix original Selena: The Series (so far).

It will be a scripted series that covers Selena’s life story. The official announcement was made on December 11, 2018, on the official Netflix U.S. news Twitter account, @SeeWhatsNext. “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom @SelenaLaLeyenda’s incredible life story is coming to Netflix as a scripted series!” read the tweet.

Her family is involved. The tweet also revealed that the Quintanilla family will develop and executive produce the project alongside Netflix.

The series is categorized as a TV/Drama with the following description on Netflix’s website: “As Mexican-American Tejano singer Selena comes of age and realizes her dreams, she and her family make tough choices to hold on to love and music.”

The leading lady. Almost a year later, Netflix unveiled a sneak peek of Christian Serratos, who portrays the late Mexica-American singer in the series. Serratos is a California-based actress of Mexican-Italian descent best known for her roles as Rosita Espinosa in AMC’s The Walking Dead, Suzie Crabgrass in the Nickelodeon series Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide and Angela Weber in The Twilight Saga series.

The rest of the cast. Another tweet posted on November 12, 2019, revealed that Ricardo Chavira will co-star as Selena’s father Abraham, Gabriel Chavarria as her brother A.B., Noemi Gonzalez as her sister Suzette, Seidy Lopez as her mother Marcella and Madison Taylor Baez as Young Selena.

Then, in a series of tweets published on Tuesday (March 31), the official @Selena_Netflix Twitter account unveiled the Latinx cast members, portraying the Quintanilla family and Los Dinos band members. Each cast member, including Jesse Posey as Chris Perez, Ricardo Chavira as Abraham Quintanilla, and Noemi Gonzalez as Suzette Quintanilla, shared sweet anecdotes about Selena. (Ed. note: the Twitter account is currently unverified by the platform, but is sanctioned by Netflix.)

The release year, if not the exact date. Selena: The Series has not announced a release date; however, the official Netflix Twitter account revealed that “part 1 premieres in 2020”. Also hinting that the series comes with more than one season.
