Sia Adopted Two Teenage Boys Last Year

The boys were about to age out of the foster care system.

If there’s one thing we know about Sia, other than the fact that she’s an amazing singer/songwriter, it’s that she values her privacy. The extent to which she shields her off-stage life came into focus on Tuesday (May 19) when, during an interview with The Morning Mash-Up on SiriusXM she revealed that she adopted two 18-year-old boys to save them from aging out of the foster care system.

The 44-year-old singer said, “I actually adopted two sons last year. They were both 18 — they’re both 19-years-old now. They were aging out of the foster care system. Yeah, and I love them.” According to Covenant House, when young people age out of the system at 18 or 21-years-old, they are often “ill-equipped to navigate a successful path to a self-sufficient and independent adulthood. That’s precisely when they become most vulnerable — to homelessness, human trafficking, and a host of other threats and obstacles to their well-being and future happiness.”

Though she didn’t reveal any other information about her expanded family — a spokesperson for the singer could not be reached for additional information at press time about the adoption — Sia said they’re all muddling through the pandemic lockdown together and doing their best to stay positive. “They are both finding it pretty difficult, one more so than the other,” she said. “But they’re both doing things that are really good for them right now, that are really helpful. They’re really doing a lot of educational stuff that’s good for them.”

Earlier this month, Sia performed the new song “Saved My Life” on the “COVID is No Joke” fundraising event.
