The 13 Best Things That Happened In Music This Week (Nov. 1)

Halloween spirits were out in full force throughout this week, with celebs serving up some insanely awesome costumes like Ciara and Russell Wilson’s almost-eerie Beyoncé and Jay-Z ensembles and Nicki Minaj’s Bride of Chucky before Thursday (Oct. 31) — and then of course plenty more on the actual holiday.

Though Halsey had most of her Halloween fun over the weekend, Ellen DeGeneres made sure the “Without Me” singer got a good scare upon visiting The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday (Oct. 30), when she also revealed she’s now dating American Horror Story actor Evan Peters. Ellen also surprised Charlie Puth, but not in a scary way whatsoever: The host introduced the Friends fanatic to Friends star Jennifer Aniston on Tuesday (Oct. 29), which resulted in quite the fanboy moment.

In other news, BTS closed out their Love Yourself: Speak Yourself World Tour in Seoul; My Chemical Romance reunited; and James Corden took his Carpool Karaoke bit to the skies with Kanye West. Dubbed Airpool Karaoke, Corden and West spent almost 20 minutes singing with a full choir while on a plane — and yes, it’s as Kanye as it sounds.

Check out some of the week’s biggest happenings below.

Lewis Capaldi hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 (and had a hilarious reaction)

After weeks of moving up and down the top five of the Billboard Hot 100, Lewis Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved” finally reached No. 1 on Monday (Oct. 28), dethroning Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts.” The feat marks Capaldi’s first chart-topper on the Hot 100, though the ballad has previously ruled multiple charts globally, including the Official UK Singles survey (for seven weeks!) beginning in March. The typically goofy British singer’s response to his latest No. 1 was very Capald-esque: "I feel like I'm a wrestler, and I'm just walking out to the ring] and there's an American flag, and I'm saying, 'U.S.A! U.S.A.!' That's what I feel like, a wrestler," he told Billboard's Pop Shop Podcast.

Kanye West and James Corden sang some Airpool Karaoke

Kanye West took to the skies in an over-the-top episode of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke. Surrounded by more than 100 members of his Sunday Service gospel choir, West ran a delighted Corden through a number of tracks off his new album, Jesus Is King. During the flight, the rapper also opened up about the inspiration behind starting his weekly Sunday Service and managed to credit his alleged $68 million tax return to his newly staunch Christian faith.

Selena Gomez gave Taylor Swift an adorable BFF shout-out

Selena Gomez gave a sweet shout-out to bestie Taylor Swift in the wake of releasing her dual comeback singles, “Lose You to Love Me” and “Look at Her Now.” In her Instagram Story, Gomez thanked her BFF for all her support, promising to be “on your side for life.” The singer also dished about Swift’s Lover in an interview with SiriusXM Hits 1, revealing that her favorite track from the album is empowering feminist jam “The Man.”

Taylor Swift returned to The Voice

The “Lover” singer came back to the vocal competition for the first time since 2014, this time helping mentor the contestants on Team Kelly alongside Kelly Clarkson. Swift helped on both Monday and Tuesday night’s (Oct. 29) episodes, the first of which featured an emotional encounter with Melinda Rodriguez, whose brother is a huge Swiftie but couldn’t be there to support his sister because of heart surgery. She also assisted Jake Hoo (who competed against Rodriguez), Team Gwen’s Jessie Lawrence and Kyndal Inskeep.

Bad Bunny, Sebastian Yatra, Alessia Cara and more confirmed as Latin Grammys performers

The Latin Recording Academy revealed the first group of performers for the 20th Annual Latin Grammy Awards on Tuesday, with one particularly special announcement: all three generations of the Fernández family will be taking the stage together. Alejandro Fernández, Alex Fernández and Vicente Fernández will perform a song together; other announced performers include current nominees Paula Arenas, Bad Bunny, Alessia Cara, Draco Rosa, Ximena Sariñana, Sech, and Sebastián Yatra, plus Natalia Jiménez and Olga Tañón. The annual ceremony will broadcast live on Univision Network on Nov. 14  from 8-11 p.m. ET.

Charlie Puth fanboyed over Friends again, this time thanks to Jennifer Aniston

Just a week after he appeared with her co-star Courteney Cox on Billboard’s new Quizzed segment, Jennifer Aniston surprised certified Friends superfan Charlie Puth during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. While Aniston playfully shot down the talk show host’s question about a prospective reboot of the beloved NBC series, Puth offered to do “all the new music” in the event that the show could be revived in some other way — even volunteering a bewildered DeGeneres to record a new version of the theme song with him.

Ciara and Russell Wilson won Halloween as Beyoncé & Jay-Z

Just days after dressing their adorable tots up as Michael and Janet Jackson, Ciara and Russell Wilson took the wow factor to the next level by transforming into Beyoncé and Jay-Z themselves. The couple’s homage to The Carters’ Louvre-set “Apes**t” video was picture-perfect, all the way from their pastel suiting and blinged-out jewelry to the portrait of Barack and Michelle Obama in place of the iconic Mona Lisa.

Halsey got a good scare (and confirmed she has a new boyfriend)

Halsey was the latest victim of Ellen DeGeneres’ scaring antics, appropriately while she was talking about her Halloween costume. The talk show host spooked the singer so bad that she confessed that actor Evan Peters is, indeed, her boyfriend, following weeks of rumors. While on Ellen, Halsey also delivered the first augmented-reality performance in the show’s history with a dramatic rendition of “Graveyard.”

BTS closed out a three-night stand at Seoul’s Olympic Stadium

Wrapping up their record-breaking Love Yourself: Speak Yourself World Tour, BTS returned to their hometown of Seoul for a final three-night stint at the Olympic Stadium. While the stadium’s grounds were transformed into a veritable amusement park dedicated to the K-pop boy band, the final show culminated in a speech from RM, who spoke about the band’s “journey to find ways to love ourselves” over the course of the tour.

P!nk talked about her record-breaking tour on the latest Billboard cover

To commemorate her Legend of Live honor at the 2019 Billboard Live Music Summit and Awards next week, P!nk graces the latest Billboard cover, which debuted Thursday (Oct. 31). The “Walk Me Home” singer chatted with Billboard about the magic that was her Beautiful Trauma World Tour, which grossed $397.3 million, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore and is the highest-grossing tour by a woman this decade (and the second in history). Even crazier? She called her insanely impressive career a “fluke.”

Stars celebrated Halloween

Though a slew of celebs revealed their 2019 Halloween costumes the weekend prior to Oct. 31, several took to social media on actual Halloween to share their elaborate getups, from Mariah Carey channeling her inner rock star to Drake dressing up as his dad (which was, of course, spot-on). And as stars wished fans a Happy Halloween on Instagram, BTS did so with some creatively spooky Halloween videos on TikTok.

My Chemical Romance (finally) announced their reunion

A long-anticipated rumor came true: My Chemical Romance is finally reuniting. The rock group have teased fans for what feels like years (with several false alarms also triggering frenzies), but on Halloween, they made its official: MCR revealed plans for a reunion show at Los Angeles’ Shrine Expo Hall on Dec. 20. My Chemical Romance shared the news their newly launched official Instagram account, with AXS also setting up a page for fans to purchase tickets. The band did not tease whether this show means new music or more shows — or even a full tour — are in the works, but here’s hoping the excitement doesn’t stop there.

Dua Lipa, Miranda Lambert, Ariana Grande & more released new music

Ladies ruled New Music Friday this week, with Dua Lipa dropping her first single from her next album and Ariana Grande unleashing her girl-powered Charlie's Angels soundtrack that features the likes of Normani, Nicki Minaj, Anitta, Kash Doll and even Donna Summer. And there's plenty more where that came from: HAIM and Teyana Taylor also have new songs, and Miranda Lambert's latest album, Wildcard, is also out now. Check out Billboard's takes on all of those and more in this week's First Stream!
