It’s the group’s first visit to any Billboard Latin albums chart.
The Black Eyed Peas secure their first top five on any Billboard Latin albums chart as the trio’s new star-studded Translation debuts at No. 3 on the Top Latin Albums chart (dated July 4) and at No. 52 on the all-genre Billboard 200. The 15-song set includes eight Spanglish tracks featuring superstars from the world of Latin music including J Balvin, Maluma and Shakira.
Translation, the Black Eyed Peas’ eighth studio album and first since 2018’s Masters of the Sun Vol. 1, bows with 15,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending June 25, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. Of that sum, 4,000 were in albums sales while the bulk of the remainder stemmed from streaming activity.
Translation was released on June 19 via BEP/Epic Records and is the group’s first album for Epic after a career with Interscope Records.
“I was able to produce Translation and write in Spanish and sing in Spanish because of my colorful upbringings in East LA,” will.i.am tells Billboard. “I wanted to make my childhood friends and their parents proud and let them know that I never will forget the colorful beautiful Mexican culture that I was raised in…out of all the Black Eyed Peas albums we’ve ever made, Translation truly represents how I was raised…”
The Top Latin Albums chart ranks the most popular Latin albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).
Translation registered 10,000 SEA units, which equates to 14 million on-demand streams for the album’s songs in its opening week.
A Brew of Latin Collaborations: The 15-track set includes eight Spanglish tracks featuring eight Latin acts including J Balvin “Ritmo (Bad Boys For Life),” Nicky Jam (“Vida Loca,” with Tyga), Ozuna (“Mamacita,” with J.Rey Soul), Shakira (“Girl Like Me”), Maluma (“Feel The Beat”), Becky G (“Duro Hard”), El Alfa (“No Mañana) and Piso 21 (“Todo Bueno”). The album was led by the No. 1 Hot Latin Songs hit “Ritmo (Bad Boys For Life),” in its 23rd week at No. 1 on the current list and “Mamacita” which moves 3-2.
Top 2 spots on Hot Latin Songs: As mentioned, Translation was preceded by two titles on the Hot Latin Songs chart, which blends airplay, streaming activity and digital sales: “Ritmo (Bad Boys For Life)” and “Mamacita.” It’s the second instance two songs by the same act rack up the top two slots on the chart. Bad Bunny took possession of both rankings when his entire YHLAMDLG album debuted on the chart-dated March 14 with “Si Veo a Tu Mamá” and “La Dificil” bowing at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.
