The imagery and ideas of the untouchable CLBRKS continue to evolve and encapsulate on The Iceberg Theory, his latest collaborative single with Scottish producer Vagrant Real Estate, featuring subterranean gem Renelle 893.
With every passing release, CLBRKS transcends his own indefinable excellence, plucking pinnacle producer’s from across the UK and emitting them into his enigmatic thematic universe. After a relatively quiet ’21, CL has come out swinging in ’22, having already unveiled his sorrow-tinged HABITS sequel with frequent collaborator and confidant Kiina earlier this year. Now working with highly-talented Scottish producer VRE, the rapper once again showcases his seemingly endless creativity and outrageous imagination on the title track from their upcoming joint EP.
A woozy vocal sample, silky keys and smooth rhythmic section amalgamate a rich sonic backdrop, with VRE illustrating his ear and technical nuance. Sporting his typically blasé delivery, CL’s nonchalant charisma and lyrical potency is unmatchable; every line spills onto the canvas with an apathetically jagged brushstroke, impeccably coarse, until the punchline emerges and we see the bigger picture. Renelle, who has been steadily gaining his own acclaim thanks to work with upcoming producers like Beau Peep and Guami Beats, matches the incredulous lyricism of CL, delving through poignancy and pain with vivid aloofness.
As organic and authentic as a rapper can be, CLBRKS is the most overlooked rapper in the country. Maybe that’s what he wants. Soon, he will rule us all.
