Over 21 years in the making, a new Kanye West documentary is coming to Netlflix.
Described as a “landmark documentary event,†jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy will roll out over the course of three weeks. The multi-part series was helmed by Clarence “Coodie†Simmons and Chike Ozah, who directed two of West’s first music videos, “Through the Wire†and the third iteration of “Jesus Walks.â€
The “intimate and revealing†series will focus on the rapper-turned-billionaire’s formative days trying to break through and his life today as a global brand and artist. The first trailer has been released and opens with a clip of Ye arguing with Rhymefest after he describes himself as a “genius,†and features additional appearances from JAY-Z and Kanye’s late mother, Donda West.
“Very rarely do you encounter self-contained people. This man can do everything himself. He livin’ it,†Pharrell says of Ye.
jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy will premiere virtually at the Sundance Film Festival later this month. It will hit theaters nationwide for a one-day engagement on Feb. 10 before streaming on Netflix starting Feb. 16.
Netflix reportedly paid $30 million for the documentary. While West is not creatively involved in the production, he has given his blessing by allowing himself to be filmed by Coodie & Chike for the past two decades.
