Chicago is roughly 1,500 miles from Utah, but with the rules of space and time being made increasingly irrelevant during quarantine, Zhu was able to deliver a set from the western desert for this past weekend’s online incarnation of the beloved Chicago festival Lollapalooza.
Performing from the desert at dusk while flanked by two instrumentalists, the producer delivered a deep, groovy, intermittently hypnotic and often body moving set, incorporating saxophone, guitar, hand drum, guitar and other instruments into the 50 minute performance. The set aired on Friday, July 31 as part of the four day virtual event.
The Lollapalooza 2020 livestream also featured sets from Alison Wonderland, Kaskade, G Jones b2b Eprom, Saymyname, Whipped Cream, Louis the Child and more. Dubbed “Coral.Pink”, Zhu’s set incorporated everyone from Rage Against the Machine to recent collaborators Bob Moses to Kanye West and Jay Z and was performed from Southern Utah’s Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park.
