What's Love Got To Do With (A Hit)? Hear Kygo's Massive Edit of the Tina Turner Classic

As music lore goes, Tina Turner didn’t even want to record “What’s Love Got To Do With It.” The music icon didn’t like the track and only made it after being convinced to do so by her manager. The 1984 song of course went on to become an all-time classic, and to this day remains Turner’s only solo song to reach No. 1 on the Hot 100 in the U.S.

Today (July 17), the dance world extends a particular fist pump of gratitude to Turner, with the release of Kygo’s “What’s Love Got To Do With It” edit. The Norwegian producer pares down the beginning of the song to just a simple beat and Turner’s vocals before adding drums and then blowing the roof off with piano stabs and a wall of synth and Tina asking the song’s titular existential query. Is this remix the dance song of the summer? Possibly.

Directed by Sarah Bahbah, the corresponding video tracks the dissolution of a romance, following a couple in love as anxiety, jealousy and distance drive them apart before the heroine reclaims her power via the song and a large bottle of champagne. Watch the clip below.

The “What’s Love Got To Do With It” is another victory for Kygo, who’s already having a big summer after the release of his sophomore album, Golden Hour. The LP is currently at No. 1 on the Top Dance/Electronic albums chart. Today Kygo and album collaborator Ryan Tedder will also be performing a socially distanced version of Golden Hour track “Lose Somebody” as part of iHeartRadio’s Summer Camp With the Stars series.
