Justin Bieber's new video for his Quavo collaboration "Intentions" is all about giving back, and he continued the giving spirit just hours after the video dropped Friday (Feb. 7). The Biebs stopped by MTV's Fresh Out Live to gift a deserving fan with $100,000.
Bieber personally handed the check to Julie Coker, a longtime Belieber — Justin was her first concert when she was 13 — who has dedicated herself to advocating for mental health. Coker, 22, is the president of the Stockton University chapter of Active Minds, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising mental health awareness among college students. Since partnering with Active Minds, Coker has helped screen nearly 3,700 people on her campus for suicide, depression and disordered eating behaviors.
Coker told Billboard after the show that she had been invited to Fresh Out Live to record a one-minute video promoting Active Minds, but had no clue Bieber was going to be there — let alone hand her a $100,000 check. Though she looked a bit shell-shocked upon going up on stage, Coker insists, "I was very excited."
Shortly after the taping finished, Bieber's longtime manager Scooter Braun came out (prompting several excited screams) to grab Coker and bring her backstage. Upon bringing her back out, Braun told the audience — most of whom were sporting Bieber gear, from Believe Tour shirts to Drew House hoodies — he wanted to give Julie time to have her own conversation with Justin, since their onstage interaction was so quick.
"He was wonderful. He’s so sweet and kind," Coker told Billboard of their one-on-one interaction. "I said, 'Congratulations,' because he got married to Hailey, and he asked me about my mental health story, and I told him that."
Coker plans to use the $100,000 to attend grad school at Monmouth University in New Jersey, and give the remaining amount back to the Active Minds national organization as well as her Active Minds chapter at Stockton.
Quavo also made a surprise appearance during Bieber's MTV visit, and he revealed that there's even more Bieber-Quavo records than just "Intentions." But while he didn't say whether those other songs will ever be released, Quavo did say he knew he wanted to be part of "Intentions" because it was "sticky."
"I think what he means is it's, uh, catchy," Bieber said with a smile. The "Yummy" singer then teased that the rest of Changes — which fans will hear in just one week — will have similar smooth vibes like "Intentions." "It's super R&B influenced," he said. "I started making music when I was really young, and I grew up listening to a lot of Boys II Men, stuff like that. Yeah, it's definitely very R&B. Back to my roots."
