J. Cole, known for his lyrical prowess and recent foray into professional athletics, has officially stepped away from the Nanjing Monkey Kings, a team competing in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). The rapper’s professional basketball journey in China was short-lived, spanning only a single game where he logged eight minutes of play.
While his performance drew a mix of scrutiny and curiosity from fans and critics alike, the artist has clarified that his exit was necessitated by logistical hurdles rather than a lack of commitment. The rapper cited “visa issues” as the primary reason for his early departure, noting that the administrative process took significantly longer than initially anticipated.
In a candid statement regarding his time in the league, J. Cole expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete at such a high level. “Initially, I was scheduled to play in at least 3 games for the Nanjing Monkey Kings of the CBA. The work visa process took way longer than expected, so I was only able to play in one before heading home,” he explained.
Despite the brevity of his tenure, the artist remained positive about the experience. He praised his teammates for their support and reflected on the unique cultural immersion he and his family enjoyed during their time in China. “The biggest win is that my family and I got to experience China for the first time. The people were kind, and the cities are clean and beautiful,” he added.
Looking toward the future, J. Cole hinted that his basketball aspirations remain very much alive. He expressed an openness to returning to the court for a more extended period once his current touring obligations are fulfilled. “I told the team that if I could stay in shape, I would be down to play for a longer amount of games next year after I’m done with the tour. Am I with? We’ll see. DREAMER,” he concluded.
