Brooklyn rapper Bobby Shmurda is celebrating a significant family milestone this week, as his father has officially been released from prison after serving more than 30 years behind bars. The news broke on Friday, June 19, when the artist shared an emotional update via his Instagram Story, capturing the moment he reunited with his father.
In the footage, the 31-year-old rapper is seen sitting in the backseat of a car alongside his father, clearly moved by the long-awaited reunion. “Nah, why my pops out,” Shmurda captioned the clip, expressing his disbelief and joy. Another video shows the pair together, with Shmurda lightheartedly teasing his father about his physical fitness, noting that his muscular build is a testament to his time spent working out while incarcerated.
The history behind this moment is profound. Shmurda was only an infant when his father was arrested and subsequently sentenced to 120 years in prison on charges related to robbery and assault. In a candid interview with DJ Vlad in June 2025, the rapper opened up about his father’s past, describing him as a prominent figure in the Miami drug trade during the 1990s. “My pops [was] one of those boys. So when they grabbed him, they grabbed him,” Shmurda explained.
Reflecting on his upbringing, the “Hot N***a” artist noted that growing up without his father forced him to mature rapidly, a path that eventually led him into the drug trade during his own teenage years. Now that his father has returned home, the two are looking forward to reconnecting and building a new chapter together. This release marks the end of a decades-long separation that has deeply shaped the rapper’s life and career.
