adidas Withdraws Its Opposition to Black Lives Matter’s Three-Stripe Design

adidas is pulling back its opposition against a Black Lives Matter campaign group to trademark a logo that featured a trio of parallel stripes. A spokesperson for the German sportswear imprint stated, “adidas will withdraw its opposition to the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation’s trademark application as soon as possible.”

adidas filed a complaint to the United States Patent and Trademark Office on Monday, claiming that the foundation’s insignia was “likely to cause confusion” with its own three-stripe logo that it prints on its apparel and footwear products. It also argued that it would “dilute the distinctiveness” of its emblem given that it would potentially cause consumers to associate the three-striped symbol exclusively with adidas.

adidas has declined to comment on the situation to Hypebeast, but it’s likely that it withdrew this claim because it can be viewed as a protest the Black Lives Matter — a global organization and movement in the US, UK and Canada that is designed to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes.

In case you missed it, Beyoncé, IVY Park and adidas have mutually agreed to part ways after sorting out their creative differences.
