Alejandro Fernandez Holds Back From Forbidden Love in ‘Caballero’ Lyric Translation

Alejandro Fernandez wrapped up 2019 by voicing his feelings in a new song called “Caballero,” written by José Luis Roma (Río Roma).

The heartfelt mariachi song, which debuted Oct. 3  Universal Music Latin Entertainment, is about a man who’s crushing on a woman who’s already committed, so his love must be kept secret. Instead of encouraging infidelity, Fernandez croons about being a gentleman and loving her in silence.

On Billboard's Regional Mexican Airplay chart (dated Jan. 11), the song jumped 3-1, becoming Fernandez's first leader since the chart was created in October 1994.

In the music video, filmed by Oliver Castro in Jalisco, Mexico, Fernandez flaunts a typical mariachi outfit and rides a horse as he dedicates the song to his forbidden crush.

"Caballero" is the first single from Fernandez's upcoming studio album set for 2020 that promises to be 100 percent mariachi music.

From the day that I saw you
You were accompanied
You were holding hands with him
You laughed all of a sudden
You saw me from the corner of your eye

He’s not my best friend
But I know him from somewhere
And I can’t be that man
Who doesn’t care
I try to be respectful

Hey, but come closer
This is the only time I’ll tell you my secret
If you didn’t have a compromise, I would lose all respect

And if I weren’t a gentleman, I swear
I would rip you from his arms without thinking about it
You are the woman I most like in the world
But I have respect for that lucky man

And if I weren’t a gentleman
I would steal you, not only for a kiss but for the whole week
To make love to you until you get tired
But I’m a gentleman and it’s best
It’s best if I don’t tell you anything

I already said it, I know
Please excuse me
But at least you know now
That if you go, I’ll go too
I better be quiet

Hey, but come closer
This is the only time I’ll tell you my secret
If you didn’t have a compromise, I would lose all respect

And if I weren’t a gentleman, I swear
I would rip you from his arms without thinking about it
You are the woman I most like in the world
But I have respect for that lucky man

And if I weren’t a gentleman
I would steal you, not only for a kiss but for the whole week
To make love to you until you get tired
But I’m a gentleman and it’s best
It’s best if I don’t tell you anything
