Amaarae joins Billboard‘s Platoon Africa Artist Showcase Friday (May 22) with a swoon-worthy Billboard Live At-Home performance from her Accra, Ghana hometown.
The mini-set paired well with a cup of tea, which the singer-songwriter-producer came prepared with as part of the full fine china setup next to her on the couch. Fellow Ghanaian artist Øbed accompanied her on the keyboard, wearing a face mask and sitting at least six feet apart from her to practice social distancing during their snazzy set.
She paid tribute to famed Nigerian singer-songwriter WizKid by covering his sizzling track “Joro” with her high-pitched jazzy vocals, which later floated over to sing her dazzling record “Leave Me Alone.” The unsung quarantine anthem pertains to feeling content with not being in a relationship — “All the diamonds in the world don’t outshine me,” she dauntlessly croons — before switching the narrative on “Jumping Ship,” which talks about deserting her current beau and girlfriends for another man. Amaarae even switches her flow in the last song with rap verses over Øbed’s twinkling keys.
