Cornelius Smith Sentenced to 20 Years in Young Dolph Murder Case

Cornelius Smith, one of the individuals involved in the 2021 murder of Memphis rapper Young Dolph, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison following a plea deal.

Cornelius Smith, an admitted participant in the 2021 killing of Memphis rapper Young Dolph, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. The sentencing, which took place on Friday, May 15, follows Smith’s decision to accept a plea agreement for a charge of second-degree murder.

Smith, 32, was the third and final suspect to be processed in the high-profile case. During his hearing in Memphis, he confirmed his acceptance of the plea deal, which resulted in the dismissal of his initial charges, including first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and attempted first-degree murder. His cooperation with prosecutors was described as a critical factor in the conviction of Justin Johnson, the second gunman involved in the fatal shooting of the late artist.

Shelby County Deputy District Attorney Paul Hagerman addressed the media regarding the resolution of the case, noting that the victim’s family was kept informed throughout the legal proceedings. “From his arrest until now, Cornelius has accepted responsibility, and he’s agreed to cooperate,” Hagerman stated. “I think we struck a balance of something that’s firm and something that gave them a measure of justice that they wanted.”

According to Smith’s defense attorney, Michael Scholl, the defendant is expected to receive credit for time already served, leaving him with approximately 15 years remaining on his sentence. Smith previously testified that he and Justin Johnson were acting on orders from Big Jook, the brother of rapper Yo Gotti. Justin Johnson was previously sentenced to life in prison plus 35 years, while Hernandez Govan, who was accused of masterminding the plot, was acquitted of all charges last summer.
