Rapper and podcaster N.O.R.E. has been named in a new lawsuit alleging that he sexually assaulted Carmen Bryan, the mother of Nas‘ daughter, over two decades ago. The legal action, which centers on an incident allegedly occurring in 1999, marks a significant development in the ongoing conversation regarding accountability within the hip-hop industry.
On Wednesday, September 9, attorneys representing Bryan filed a 20-page complaint in New York against the artist, born Victor Santiago. According to the filing, the incident took place at a crowded New York City nightclub while N.O.R.E. was actively promoting his album Melvin Flint – Da Hustler. Bryan alleges that an intoxicated N.O.R.E. forced himself upon her, engaging in nonconsensual digital penetration despite her repeated pleas for him to stop. The suit claims that the rapper had to be physically removed from her by other patrons at the venue.
Bryan further alleges that she fled the club, only to be followed by N.O.R.E., who continued to make inappropriate comments until he realized her identity as the mother of Nas’ child. She claims that he subsequently apologized for his behavior, both at that time and again weeks later during a Father’s Day event and a birthday celebration for their daughter.
In a statement provided to Rolling Stone, Bryan’s attorney, Marjorie Mesidor, emphasized the gravity of the allegations. “No woman signs up to be assaulted,” Mesidor stated. “The assertion that an assault is excusable—or simply did not happen—because a perpetrator failed to recognize his victim strips women of their fundamental humanity. Ms. Bryan is coming forward not only to demand accountability for the lasting trauma and public humiliation inflicted upon her, but to challenge the culture of entitlement that treats women’s bodies as collateral damage.”
Bryan reportedly kept the incident largely private for years, though she did disclose the encounter to Jay-Z, with whom she had a relationship at the time, specifically requesting that he not intervene. She noted that the 2023 lawsuit filed by Cassie Ventura against Diddy served as a catalyst for her decision to pursue legal action. According to the court documents, Bryan reached out to N.O.R.E. in March to discuss the potential lawsuit in hopes of a private resolution, but he reportedly denied any knowledge of her.
Bryan is currently seeking compensatory damages, as well as damages for mental anguish and emotional distress. XXL has reached out to N.O.R.E. for comment regarding these allegations.
