In a powerful display of community investment, Kendrick Lamar returned to his roots this past Thursday, May 7, at Centennial High School in Compton, Calif. The Grammy-winning artist was joined by fellow music icons Dr. Dre and will.i.am to celebrate the groundbreaking of a massive, $270 million construction project that promises to transform the campus.
The event marked a significant milestone for the school, which has not seen a major building project in seven decades. The new facility, slated to open in 2029, is designed to serve approximately 1,800 students, offering a modern, state-of-the-art environment to replace the existing structure.
For the attendees, the day was deeply personal. While Kendrick Lamar graduated from the institution in 2005, Dr. Dre also shared a history with the school, having attended during his freshman year in 1979 before transferring to Fremont High School.
During the ceremony, Dr. Dre took the stage to deliver an inspiring address, reflecting on the “full-circle” nature of the moment. “On this day, I’m making a commitment and that commitment is to let go of the notion of giving back. Instead, I’m embracing the power of investing forward,” he stated. “Today isn’t just about a new building, it’s about the promise I kept to the city that made me.”
While Kendrick Lamar opted not to speak, his presence and visible support underscored the importance of the project for the Compton community. The collaboration between these three industry titans highlights a collective effort to provide future generations with the resources necessary to succeed.
