For her appearance during the Stonewall Day livestream benefit, pop superstar Kesha decided to speak directly to her LGBTQ fans, before also offering a special performance of her 2017 song, “Rainbow.”
Kesha, who appeared on behalf of The Ally Coalition and the Ruth Ellis Center, aimed her words directly at the queer youth watching at home. “I really do believe that you are the future,” she said. “You inspire me with your energy, your heart, your voices and they way you take action.”
But the star also made sure to use her speech as a call to action for those same people watching. “If you’re 18, you better be voting in November, we need you,” she said. “If you’re not 18 yet, make sure people know you matter. You’re going to change the world.”
The star then launched into a stripped-down version of her empowering 2017 song, which many in the LGBTQ community have adopted as a queer anthem. “You’ll find a rainbow, rainbow, baby/ Trust me, I know life is scary,” she sang. “But just put those colors on, girl/ Come and paint the world with me tonight.”
Kesha was just one of many stars who appeared during Pride Live’s special event, which saw the likes of Taylor Swift, President Barack Obama, Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, Hayley Kiyoko and more come together to celebrate the LGBTQ community and the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots.
