In a developing legal situation, Sexxy Red has found herself named as a defendant in a lawsuit concerning alleged unpaid royalties. The case centers on claims that the late producer Tay Keith did not receive proper compensation for 13 tracks he produced for the artist throughout 2024. Seeking to clarify her position, the rapper has submitted an emotional appeal directly to the presiding judge.
In her letter, Sexxy Red emphasizes that artists typically lack direct control over the financial disbursements made to producers, noting that such matters are primarily the responsibility of the record label. “Tay Keith and I are great working partners and even greater friends,” she wrote. “If the label owes him money, I’m sure they have started the process to get him paid.”
Clarifying the Recoupment Process
Beyond the personal nature of their professional relationship, the artist took the opportunity to explain the standard industry practice of recoupment. She clarified that she, too, has faced delays in receiving her own royalties due to these contractual structures. “There are several songs that Tay Keith and I have worked on together that I haven’t received payment for yet. It’s just a process the label uses in making payments after all the monies are recouped,” she explained in the filing.
As the legal proceedings continue, Sexxy Red has formally requested to be dismissed from the lawsuit, arguing that the dispute is fundamentally between the record labels and the relevant stakeholders involved in the production agreements. The music community continues to watch closely as this case highlights the often complex financial realities behind major label releases.
