Taylor Swift Tweets Support for Black Lives Matter

Taylor Swift made another strong political statement on Tuesday (June 9), joining a growing legion of artists speaking out in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and urging Swifties to push for big, fundamental change in the American political system. “Racial injustice has been ingrained deeply into local and state governments, and changes MUST be made there,” she tweeted along with the BLM hashtag and three raised fists in various shades.

“In order for policies to change, we need to elect people who will fight against police brutality and racism of any kind,” the singer added. Swift also posted a link to an article written by former Pres. Barack Obama posted on Medium entitled “How to Make This Moment the Turning Point for Real Change,” which advocates for major changes to deal with decades of systemic racism.

Swift’s support of BLM comes amid a growing wave of backing for the group, with recent messages from Janet Jackson, YG and Neil Young, as well BTS raising $1 million for the group and the ARMY matching that amount. Tuesday featured primary elections in five states, and Swift also joined artists including Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, Kelly Roland, Tegan and Sara, Faith Hill and a number of others in encouraging fans to get out and vote.
