Why is this New Music Friday different from all other New Music Fridays?
Well, a lot of this week’s new music actually dropped on Friday, rather than throughout the week. There are new quarantine-centric tracks from Twenty One Pilots and Bad Bunny, a new full-length from The Strokes and the first single from Charli XCX’s new album, with production from A.G. Cook and BJ Burton (the strong 22, A Million vibes are probably no coincidence).
Today also brings us two new interviews Billboard‘s First Stream Live podcast, with Laura Marling and the Utah-based alt-pop group The Aces.
Marling has a typically excellent new album out now, Song for Our Daughter, her first solo project since 2017. Billboard spoke to the prolific singer-songwriter about the new music, life in isolation, and the vertiginous new perspectives age can illuminate. “Now that I’m 30,” says Marling, “I see people who were my age when I started, I started when I was 16, 17, and I’m astonished. It takes my breath away, how young they are, in a really brilliant way.”
And The Aces shed some light on their recent single “Lost Angeles” and what listeners can expect from their upcoming album: “We are a lot more explicit, we are a lot more vulnerable, the stories are just there, and there’s not really room for interpretation… you’re just really getting the story.” They also teased the new track “801” that nods to their hometown of Provo.
