Outside of the U.S., the recent death of Arboleda and Lopez bring to the forefront the seriousness of police brutality and racism around the world.
As protests spread across the country demanding racial justice, Latin music artists are also breaking their silence on Anderson Arboleda, a young black man who recently died at the hands of police in Colombia.
On May 19, Arboleda, a 19-year-old Afro-descendant man, was allegedly beaten outside his home by local police officers for breaking the quarantine curfew. He was hit multiple times on the head with a baton and tear-gassed, according to his mother Claudia Arboleda, reports El Tiempo. Arboleda, who aspired to become a soldier of the Military Police and sold face masks in his town, was pronounced dead due to brain death on May 20 at Valle del Lili clinic in Cali.
Arboleda’s story came to light in a tweet by ChocQuibTown’s Goyo (real name: Gloria Martinez), just days after a video of George Floyd’s death surfaced showing police officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on the neck. “Racism is when police murder a young negro in Puerto Tejada supposedly for failing to comply with the quarantine. And this isn’t reported by big media outlets. Is this not enough to outrage a country?”
In an Instagram post, J Balvin shared Arboleda’s story and publicly asked for justice. “One of the things that doesn’t let me sleep at night is injustice and that’s why I ask for Anderson Arboleda’s death to be investigated,” he expressed. “I raise a voice of protest and justice […] there is also racism here [in Colombia] and that is why I want to denounce it.”
El Tiempo reports that commander of the Cauca police, Colonel Rosemberg Novoa, is investigating the case.
Outside of the U.S., the recent death of Arboleda brings to the forefront the seriousness of police brutality and racism around the world. In Mexico, activists and artists, such as Alejandro Fernandez and Salma Hayek, are also demanding justice for Giovanni Lopez, who was recently allegedly tortured and killed by police in Jalisco, Mexico for not wearing a mask that was also caught on video.
With the world taking notice of cases of racism and police brutality, artists have taken to social media to condemn the acts and demand justice for the families of the victims.

Anderson Arboleda, un nombre que genera dolor, que genera temor por la situación a su alrededor. Llevo unos años de mi vida teniendo una posición privilegiada, algunas personas actúan diferente conmigo por representar lo que represento y sé que no puedo sentir lo que otros sienten en medio de su dolor, pero sí siento mucha empatía con situaciones de esta naturaleza. Mi posición no nubla mi corazón, mi posición no me hace sentir ajeno a las cosas que pasan en mi país, no soy insensible y precisamente, al ser una persona que es escuchada, tengo el deber de comunicar hechos que pasan y que me llenan de ansiedad. Una de las cosas que me roba el sueño en las noches es la injusticia y por eso pido que se investigue y que se indague en la muerte de Anderson Arboleda, un jóven, afrodescendiente de Puerto Tejada, norte del Cauca. Anderson salió de su casa, durante la cuarentena, para llevar a su hermano a casa de un familiar y cuando regresaba a su casa, dos uniformados le hicieron un comparendo. Él protestó y le propinaron 5 bolillazos en su cabeza que, claramente, lo afectaron. Aún así el joven fue hasta la estación de policía a preguntar por qué lo habían agredido si no había hecho nada mal. Camino a su casa, empezó a sentirse muy mal y con mucho dolor en su cabeza. Al sus familiares observar el mal estado en el que había llegado, lo llevaron al hospital y debido a su situación, fue trasladado a una clínica. Fue diagnosticado con muerte cerebral a lo que su cuerpo después reaccionó con la muerte. ¡Levanto una voz de protesta y de justicia para que se investiguen estos hechos! Estás situaciones no solo pasan en otros países, acá también hay racismo y por eso quiero denunciarlo. Si me permiten pedir algo en este momento, ¡pido que este caso se investigue y se esclarezca! #andersonarboleda
