As YG prepares for the release of his upcoming album, The Gentlemen’s Club, the Compton rapper is reflecting on the creative process and the industry pressures that once dictated his output. Marking his first project in six years, the album represents a significant shift in his approach to music, largely influenced by a candid conversation with Kendrick Lamar.
In a recent video conversation with DJ Hed, which premiered on YouTube on June 4, 2026, YG opened up about the long hiatus between his projects. He admitted that there was a period in his career where his primary motivation for dropping music was to satisfy the requirements of his Def Jam contract. During a studio session where he played his new material for Kendrick, the two discussed the pitfalls of rushing creative work to escape unfavorable business deals.
“I was talking to Dot, I’m playing him the album and sh*t… I’m telling him about what I was doing, like putting out albums just to get out the deal ’cause my deal was f**ked up,” YG explained. “He (Kendrick) was like, ‘Bro, you ain’t never supposed to do that. You gotta give it your all every time.'”
Taking this advice to heart, YG has pivoted toward a more intentional creative direction. He describes The Gentlemen’s Club as a concept album rooted in authentic storytelling and personal perspective, with the ultimate goal of earning critical respect rather than just checking boxes for a label. With this seventh studio effort, the 4Hunnid leader is aiming to demonstrate his growth as an artist.
The Gentlemen’s Club is scheduled to arrive on all digital streaming platforms on June 19.
