Sonic the Hedgehog will soon scurry through classic 2D gameplay in a fully revamped Sonic Superstars game. At this week’s Summer Game Fest, Sega announced that the all-new title is set to launch this fall. And fueling further excitement, the gaming company revealed that OG Sonic creator Naoto Oshimota will return to design parts of the upcoming modernized classic.

In the forthcoming game, the beloved blue hedgehog will navigate the North Star Islands with trusty companions Amy Rose, Tails and Knuckles on a mission to defeat Dr. Eggman. Fang the Sniper, who previously appeared in Game Gear’s Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble and Sonic the Fighters, will also play a role in the new title.

At the Fest, Sega also pulled back the curtain on Sonic Superstars‘ official trailer. The visual opens with nods to the game’s retro days, featuring scenes of the Old Sonic racing through the 1991 display until he unexpectedly finds himself in the updated 2023 version. Less pixelated and very confused, the New Sonic toggles back and forth between the old display and the new one, allowing viewers to take in the visual similarities and differences. In addition to updated graphics, the trailer promises that the new game will include “new powers and abilities” as well as cooperative gameplay and a potential new character.

Sonic Superstars will be available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X this fall. Watch the official trailer above.

Elsewhere in gaming, ‘Mortal Kombat 1’ released its official gameplay trailer.
