The 2016 class served as a pivotal moment for the genre, introducing the world to ten distinct voices: Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage, Kodak Black, Lil Yachty, Denzel Curry, Anderson .Paak, Desiigner, G Herbo, Dave East, and Lil Dicky. In a reflective conversation with DJ Drama, G Herbo looks back on the memories of that era and how his perspective on success has shifted over the last decade.
The Divine Timing of a Landmark Class
Reflecting on the passage of time, G Herbo admits that while a decade feels significant, the industry moves at a breakneck pace. “When I look back at it, it has seemed like it hasn’t been 10 years, for real,” he shares. “Ten years is so long, but in this industry, in the business, it goes by like this.” For the Chicago native, the 2016 class was defined by a unique convergence of styles. As a leading figure in the Chicago drill movement, Herbo stood out by staying true to his roots while his peers explored various sonic landscapes.
“I really feel like it was divine time,” Herbo explains. “2015, 2016, and 2017 were some of the best years of rap and hip-hop for my generation.” Rather than chasing fleeting trends, Herbo focused on his core strength: raw, authentic storytelling. He notes that the pressure to conform to melodic trends never swayed his approach, believing that listeners ultimately gravitate toward artists who remain true to themselves.
Defining Success on His Own Terms
Now 30 years old, G Herbo has evolved into a multiplatinum-selling and Grammy-nominated artist. His definition of success has matured alongside his career, shifting from the hunger of a newcomer to the calculated balance of a seasoned professional. “Success is being able to do what I love, but to do it on my own pace, on my own terms,” he says. “Balance fatherhood, I’m about to get married, and still being able to navigate through the industry and still have success at this level.”
As he looks toward the future, Herbo remains committed to consistency and growth, proving that the foundation laid during his time as an XXL Freshman was merely the beginning of a long and impactful journey.
